My first piece of sculpture I would like to work on is the idea of plastic pollution found within our sea. Going forward towards my degree in Marine Biology there are usually two main subjects that come into mind that are causing harm towards our marine life, climate change and plastic pollution. There has already been plastic recorded within the deepest parts of our oceans where not even light can touch, yet mankind has been able to leave their mark there without being aware. The materials I would like to use is plastic I find on the beaches located in Corpus Christi and create a marine organism that is idea of fishing in South Texas. Depending on the size of the sculpture and the time I have available for finishing this piece, I might have to gather plastic from my own home as well. There was a conservation project done in Bandon, Oregon where artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi used plastic waste washed up ashore on beaches to create different marine life that are affected by the plastic debris within the area, “Washed Ashore”. Her artwork inspired me to do something similar, while I’ll be out in the field I always notice plastic trash and pick it up. But I’ve always been driven to do something with it, due to me having a worry in the back of my mind, “What if it ends up back here?”
Final Sculpture
Beginning of my project I had an idea of what I wanted to do, collect plastic debris off the beach to create a marine organism sculpture. I originally decided to go with a Red Drum fish or “Red Fish”. However, with the lack of time, materials, and other challenges that I had to overcome, I decided to work on the same project with a different approach. Gathering plastic or pollutant material to create some type of organism.
As time went, I focused less on what type of creature I was trying to create and focused more on just adding more to my sculpture by adding more plastic bottles. Once adding more I was able to get an idea of what the materials were helping me create. With the use of water bottles, face mask and lights added I was able to create a ctenaphore. *Within blog post #8 giving my Artist Statement.
Proposal on Reusable Wood Boards
I wanted to recreate the a similar element within my 2.0 sculpture project, so I continue the use of recycled material from wooden boards that were found washed up aside the shorelines. Due to recent storms and hurricanes, I was able to located and collect more than enough wood to work on my multiple sculpture projects. I did not have any influence at the time but went with the momentum of releasing stress and anxitey by cutting wooden boards into smaller pieces in order to create an unknown objects.
The Process
I wanted to work on my new adventure project with incorporating recycled material that was once seen as a useful tools, that is also seen as trash, once it lost its purpose. What I focused on was my interest towards reusing wooden plank boards, which are highly discarded in random fields or even in highly populated public places that many will tend to ignore. I collected these boards off the shoreline near my local city park, and began to soon have a large collection of boards; due to me not knowing how large or how many sculptures I wanted to create. Due to my own personal dilemmas and mental health, I just began my art project with chopping the boards into smaller pieces. This process ended up being some type of therapeutic workout for me.
Once most of the pieces were cut into small pieces, I start with gluing those small shards into an object. At first I had no inspiration. But after some thought on what I was looking forward to the most out with in a certain troubling week, I started to create sculptures and designs on two certain events that excited me. The new Mandalorian season 2, and Halloween.
Creating the creatures skull out of wooden shards was an interesting process, and one I really enjoyed. I wanted to see this art piece though the end. I also burned some pieces of wood in order to see what effect it would give if some of the wood was charred away.
Final Work
The Continuation of Project 2.0
Instead of creating an object simply by gluing one piece of wood on top of the other, this entire project is focused on the process in creating the sculpture that is seen.
Originally I wanted to create something more with this piece but after painting, I felt that the art was completed and did not want to add on more because it could take away from what I wanted to create.
During weeks of creating my series, I decided to work on something I’ve thought I would enjoy so much which was creating temporary art. These pieces were made daily and were destroyed after creation, only a photo and a memory remain. It was great way to show that not everything that is art can be there physically like what most artist do when creating something that has meaning to them. A physical reminder that can be hold or touch.
Towards the end of my temporary art series I wanted to create something that was a reminder of what those pieces were. They where all an image of what I was feeling, on who I am as a person as the days go by. So this mask is in a sense a image of myself. As well as incorporating a little inspiration toward my native heritage.
