"Don't worry about doing research. Just search." - Austin Kleon
The reason this quote reaches out towards me, is due to the meaning on the words research and search. Research you are locating and studying a certain source of material in order to find the facts behind it. As for search, you are only looking for that source carefully and thoroughly that could possibly connect to it. You're not worrying about the truth behind the source, just everything that could be related towards it.
"It is better to take what does not belong to you than to let it lie around neglected." - Mark Twain
I believe what Mark Twain meant in a sense, we take on other peoples dreams and ideas to add on to or create something new and original. You can see whether or not certain objects were shown love and care, which shows over time. In addition to that, possibly due to human nature we continue to pick up were other left off, to create something greater and give a little of yourself into an object.
"Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic." - Jim Jarmusch
Reading this quote I see it as it being the guide towards your own uniqueness. Of course, we gather our own personalities and likes by viewing the world and picking things or objects that we like. Such as picking our own favorite colors, animals, music, or place. Its our own uniqueness but it is not something new or something we claim as ours its something borrowed in order to create our own individuality.
"Fake it 'til you make it." - Austin Kleon
I fancy this quote made by the author, Kleon, the meaning behind it is so accurate in everyday life. Originally we do not have a idea on how the world works, so we either learn or be taught on how to solve problems and if not then we just wing it. It's like taking your first steps, don't really have a straight idea on how to stand up and start walking, we tumble and fall over in order to get the feeling right. We as humans learn in order to conquer and learning is a process, during that process we are mostly faking or winging it in order to get the technique down right.
"I have stolen all of these moves from all these great players. I just try to do them proud, the guys who came before, because I learned so much from them. It's all in the name of the game. It's a lot bigger than me." - Kobe Bryant
Watching the Lakers and seeing Kobe making those dunks was amazing every time I watched a game. He right about stolen moves such as from Micheal Jordan, in order to get where he is ranked in NBA history. Amazing players get where they are through practice and dedication, which can only be done by copying the best of the best that is out there. Now Kobe is seen as idol towards younger ball player and some of his own moves may even be "stolen" by those like Steph Curry or maybe Kawhi Leonard?
"A few years later, Jurassic Park II finally came out. And it sucked. The sequel always sucks compared to the sequel in our heads." - Austin Kleon
This quote made me laughed because it was true. Reading this made me think back to expectations on sequels or continued stories, how that your own thoughts may get in the way of actual story line that the author made.
"Work that only comes from the head isn't any good." - Austin Kleon
First off, what??? As a biology major this sentence is a bit redundant and silly, of course in a scientific aspect you need your brain for everything. It is the reason you are able to move your hands to paint, giving you motion through your limbs and other necessary use to react to stimuli. Without your head, hence brain, their will be no person or personality behind worlds greatest gifts. Many great artist we're brilliant master minds such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, or even musical artist that need to use their hands such as Mozart.
"That's how I try to do all my work now. I have two desks in my office-one is "analog" and one is "digital." The analog desk has nothing but markers, pens, pencils, paper, index cards, and newspaper. Nothing electronic is allowed on that desk." - Austin Kleon
I find this technique very useful in both the art field and scientific field of work. Or in any work field. We live in a world where technology is on the rise and is used everyday. It's great how far we as humans advance in such a short amount of time, compared to a century ago. However, sometimes its better to write out problems on pen and paper compared to computer. An example of this is elementary school, students must first learn times tables though writing on paper how to solve the problem before using a calculator. This technique is used in mathematics in order to fully understand formulas and calculations even though calculators now of days can solve almost all types of formulas.
"The work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life." - Jessica Hische
In a sense I agree with this quote, many great minds were able to rise to the top by doing something that many would consider hobbies. Many artist such as Linkin Park, Green Day, or even the Rolling Stones had many who sided that what these bands were doing was just playing music for fun nothing serious. They faced many obstacles before making it into the limelight, but many would say that playing in a band is more of a hobbyist field than as a career. But those who become successful from hard work and dedication can make their favorite hobby into something they can do for the rest of their lives.
"The only mofos in my circle are people that I can learn from." - Questlove
True, its better to keep your social group small, and surround yourself with people who you want to learn from. It's always advise to get rid of bad influence at a young age, mostly in your teens, but there's truth to it. As I saw when I got older and continued with my college career, many of my old friends showed no interest in college and found more of an interest to "living life to the fullest" at a young age. Partying, going out, or just settling for jobs that one would consider not a career choice. Sadly I distanced myself from those types of people even though we were close friends but my life, my future lead me to a different path. And I'm meeting people that can help get to where I want in life.
"The best way to get approval is to not need it." - Hugh MacLeod
In a sense I understand this quote, it show that you shouldn't be needing approval from other or care what other think of you. However, it is known to accept approval or have other tell you of your improvements. Not hearing that you have improved in your work is like taking an exam and not knowing your end results. All you hear back is you passed, but you don't see if you improved or need improvement. Its upsetting to the individual not knowing if their work has any effect on the person themselves. I say leave comments, always comment. Even if you're a hater, it shows where the individual needs improvement even if the comment can be hurtful to the individual. How do you think successful people like celebrities have to deal with that, but their still seen on top.
"Telling yourself you have all the time in the world, all the money in the world, all the colors in the palette, anything you want - that just kills creativity." - Jack White
I both agree and disagree with this quote. Why I disagree because this quote can be used other than an artist prospective, such as if you happen to be that type of person who works constantly and forgets to loosen up before killing your inner child or "fun side." To me I could use this quote when I have the pleasure to finally go out of town, either on a holiday or vacation. Forget all your worries and just have fun, because we forget are lives may have many years but those years go by so quickly that we forget to take a break. So tell yourself that you have all the time in the world, that you can do anything because money isn't an option so go see that movie, go to an amusement park, and finally buy that item you've been eyeing for weeks, but it is important to watch your money...
